The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development
Adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development sets out 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a universal framework for advancing action for people, planet and prosperity and strengthening universal peace in larger freedom. SDG16 – Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels – is at the core of CSPPS’ mandate. As a platform, we see it as an enabler of the implementation of the wider 2030 Agenda. CSPPS engages in key global processes where progress on the 2030 Agenda is discussed, reviewed, and advanced.
SDG16+
Sustainable Development Goal 16 (SDG16) is one of the 17 goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It calls for the promotion of peaceful and inclusive societies, access to justice for all, and effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels. For CSPPS, SDG16 is particularly significant because it recognises the close relationship between peace, development, justice and inclusive governance. SDG16+ is at the core of CSPPS’s mandate and advocacy efforts, and works to ensure that civil society can meaningfully contribute to the implementation, monitoring and review of SDG16.
High-Level Political Forum (HLPF)
The High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) is the United Nations’ central platform for the follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). For CSPPS, the HLPF is an important space to advocate for SDG 16 on peace, justice and strong institutions and for the meaningful participation of civil society in the implementation and review of the 2030 Agenda. CSPPS works with its members and partners to bring the perspectives, experiences, and priorities of the civil society actors into discussions around the HLPF and Voluntary National Review (VNR) processes.
United Nations General Assembly (UNGA)
The United Nations General Assembly brings together all UN Member States to address some of the world’s most pressing challenges and define shared priorities for international cooperation. Its annual high-level week in New York provides an important opportunity for governments, civil society, international organiszations, and other stakeholders to engage in global policy discussions and advance commitments across the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Since the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals in 2015, CSPPS and its members have used the opportunities around UNGA to advocate for SDG16+, participate in high-level discussions and side events, and engage with partners and decision-makers.
